Comments :

"Grand vin bien élevé, raffiné, pour l'instant dans un registre puissant mais tout est là pour en faire la belle bouteille d'ici à cinq ans."

 Bettane Desseauve 2012 - Note : 16/20

"Parmi la trilogie des cuvées de terroir, nous avons un faible pour l'élevage discret du Varennes du Grand Clos"

RVF 2012 - Note : 16/20

"This is a lovely, ripe wine, its plum character very evident. It has a cool character as well, the acidity pushing through. Aged in wood (not new), the wine has a polished feel on the finish."

Wine Enthusiast-Buyers Guide 2011 - Note 91/100

"Richly layered, with smoldering tobacco and charcoal notes weaving through steeped blackberry, currant paste and mulled cherry fruit flavors. A  charcoal edge hangs through the finish, lending a firm feel. Best from 2013 trough 2018."

Wine Spectator 2012 - Note : 91/100

Description

Les Varennes du Gand Clos is situated at the foot of the gravelly terrace formed, in part, by the erosion of the limestone slope.

This very particular silico-clay and silico-calcareous terroir lies on the left bank of the Vienne, in Sazilly.

These 4.5 ha (10.8 acres) of vines planted between 1962 and 1976, offer long keeping wines on dark fruit and spicy aromas.

"The 2009 vintage, with its dark and spicy aromas, powerful and elegant, is fully reflecting its long keeping potential.

Rich and complex, this Clos reveals a blackcurrant perfume, in mouth, the fruits are intense, suave and delicate."
